Waterproof Ceramic Tile Floors

Waterproofing Ceramic Tile Floors: Before you begin to waterproof your ceramic tile floor you will have to follow the basic steps of cleaning your sub-floor and ensuring that it is clean.

Sweep all excess dirt from your sub-floor and then ensure that the foundation is solid, if necessary you might want to reinforce your subfloor with some more plywood to ensure that you have a good solid foundation on which to place your cement backer board.

When the work area is properly cleaned you can now begin to take measurements to determine how much backer board and waterproof membrane you will require to complete the job.

OK so now that you are certain that you have a very sturdy foundation which will not shift, you have to install your ceramic tile waterproof membrane before you can install your ceramic backer board.

As with all waterproof membranes you should follow the instructions that came with your waterproof membrane when you purchased it as all manufacturers supply important information on how to install their particular brand of waterproof membrane.

Make sure that when you are purchasing your waterproof membrane that it is designed for waterproofing ceramic tile floors, or else you might find yourself in big trouble, as it might not get the job done correctly.

Make sure that you are using the proper epoxy, sealant, etc to suit your particular brand of waterproof membrane, and remember to seal all joining and edges so that water will not be able to seep through onto the subfloor and cause it to rot.

The same goes for when you are installing your ceramic tiles you will have to seal and if necessary caulk your grout joints in order to prevent water from seeping into the grout joints and causing it to crack which will cause the ceramic tiles to loosen or crack.

After you have installed your waterproof membrane and it is dried, you are now ready to install your cement backer board. Again follow the manufacturer's instructions as to how to install cement backer board and you will be on the right track.

Now let the backer board bond solid to the waterproof membrane on the subfloor and then you are ready to install your ceramic tiles which will be securely waterproofed.
