Vapor Barriers And Manufacturers

Vapor Barriers And Manufacturers: Musty odors are caused by water vapor that enters your home through the concrete walls, slabs and the dirt beneath your crawl space.

If you have ever been to your basement or garage you probably noticed a stale musty scent, well that is what happens when you do not properly install vapor barriers in your basement or garage, or in your attic for that matter.

Water starts seeping through those tiny little spaces in your walls, floor space and ceiling and it becomes damp and moist and begins to create mildew and causes the whole place to smell all musty and unpleasant. For this reason there are many manufacturers who are making vapor barriers to eliminate this problem.

Now choosing a vapor barrier can be a harrowing task as there are many different manufacturers out there and you can bet that they all boast that their product is the best.

First off determine where you want to install your vapor barriers, whether it is the attic or the basement walls and then you can visit some of the manufacturers websites on the internet and compare products and prices.

You might also want to check out what other people who have used these products are saying about them, they will be able to give you first hand advice on their experience.

Installing vapor barriers is not a very mind bogging task but pay particular attention to where they are joined as if they are not properly sealed water can seep through the seams and cause rot and mildew to develop.

Ensure that the entire wall is sealed and stapled properly to the studs to prevent leakage before you start to install the boards for the permanent wall.

Also if it is that you are installing vapor barriers in the attic remember there is no need to install the vapor barrier on both sides of the insulation. This is to allow for any excess moisture that may accumulate inside the insulation to be able to run off freely and not cause problems further down the line.

The secret to a good vapor barrier insulation is sealing, ensure that all the ends and overlaps are sealed securely so that water will not be able to penetrate through the vapor barrier.

And just a note that you might want to keep in mind for those of you who might be doing a brand new installation , there are some insulations that have vapor barriers integrated in them so you might want to check them out.

They will definitely save you some money, but keep in mind that this type of insulation is only recommended for a new installation and is not suitable for repair jobs.
