There was a time when shopping for most things like kitchen countertops was relatively easy simply because there were very limited choices available on the market.
Not many types of Kitchen countertops were available or the few variations that were available weren't very affordable to the masses.
But over the years, changes in the global economy and technology has seen the whole face of shopping change, so that many variations of products are available at affordable prices to a larger number of people.
It is for this reason that there are so many different types of kitchen countertops out there today. In the very distant past is was no surprise to hear of Kings and Queens living in luxury, which included having golden beds and all sorts of decorations made out of precious metals and materials.
In the more recent past it was only the very affluent who would have expensively furnished homes. But today, even modest homes can be furnished with the best materials, and the kitchen is definitely one place that has seen the benefit of our continuously changing time.
Kitchen countertops, for the greater part of the 20th century, were typically made out of linoleum or a laminated covering.
This was due partly out of necessity since may furnishings such as counters and cabinets were made out of wood and need to be protected against water and other liquids that would cause it to rot, but it was also used in many kitchens because these materials were expensive and had some aesthetic appeal.
It must be said, however, that today they are still preferred by some because they are easy to use and many people opt for using them in and around the kitchen but on very small surfaces rather than on large areas like entire countertops.
But indeed, their popularity has significantly decreased over the years. The decrease in popularity came as a result of a number of problems that people faced with linoleum and laminated countertops.
These countertops on kitchen counters were prone to stains over time and their surfaces were easily scratched and scraped by the use of simple kitchen knifes.
Moreover, perhaps the biggest problem with this type of kitchen countertop was the fact that when water got under the materials, as was inevitable, the countertops would rot posing hygienic threats as well as being an eye sore.
Today these types of materials are particularly unpopular as countertop materials because they are not solid enough to stand up to more modern changes in kitchen décor.
For instance, with the introduction of the stainless steel under-mounted kitchen sink, laminate, which tends to 'bubble' on the surface because of the condensation taking place below the counter, was quickly replace by a more solid, less soluble material.
Because of the changes in other kitchen appliance and décor, such as the stainless steel under-mounted sink and the kitchen island that contains built-in stoves and refrigerators, kitchen counters and kitchen countertops needed to be stronger and more durable.
It is here that concrete, tiles more natural materials like granite and marble started appearing on countertops in more kitchens around the world.
Concrete counters finished with a tile countertops is possibly the most popular type of kitchen countertop that can be found in the average home, simply because it is inexpensive but can give an impressive finish due to the wide variety, patterns and styles of tile that is available on the market.
Because of changes in technology, natural materials like granite became significantly less expensive and thus, seen in more kitchens. However, marble has still remained among one of the more expensive materials to use on kitchen countertops.
