The two main types of ceramic tiles are glazed tiles which are usually used for walls and counter tops and unglazed tiles which are used for floors.
Glazed tiles have to be baked in a kiln to give it its permanent glazed finish and hard texture, and they come in various colors for you to choose from. In addition they are waterproofed and highly stain resistant.
The baking of these tiles in a kiln is what makes the finished product so hard. Unglazed tiles on the other hand do not offer much in the way of color choices and because it does not have a glazed surface it cannot stand up too well when it comes to staining. Because unglazed ceramic tiles are slip resistant they are ideal for installation on your kitchen and bathroom floors.
Another type of ceramic tile is Porcelain ceramic tiles. These tiles are very water resistant and are so durable that they are the number one choice when it comes to installing tiles on your patio or other outside conditions where the traffic flow is rigorous.
Although porcelain ceramic tiles are ideal for outdoor installation that is not to say that they cannot be installed in your kitchen or bathroom, as a matter of fact these tiles will work great no matter where they are installed.
Ceramic tiles come in a wide variety of sizes, styles, shapes and colors, but for most ceramic wall tile installation, the ceramic tiles are usually much smaller than those intended for use on floors and they are highly water-resistant.
Mosaic tiles are another type of ceramic tile, they are ideal for countertops and walls and are made of a variety of different clays. Mosaic tiles are totally resistant to moist and stains.
Quarry tiles are just as the name implies they are made up from various clays and are not glazed. These tiles are basically red in color and are used in the interior of your home, because they are somewhat porous.
Some other terms when describing ceramic tiles are base tiles, trim tiles, rounded edge tiles which are sometimes referred to as “bull nose” and so forth.
Each of these tiles have a specific purpose, and the exact layout of these tiles will determine how your finished ceramic tile installation is going to look.
Other types of tiles that are commonly used in the home are marble, granite and slate which are natural looking tiles. Because of their natural look they will enhance the beauty of any room that they are installed in.
