Smoke From Chimney

If you are experiencing excessive smoke from chimney or fireplace there can be a couple of different reasons for this to be happening.

Here are a few scenarios of what could be the probable causes. It might be due to a blocked chimney; probably your chimney is dirty and needs to be cleaned with a chimney sweep.

Check to see whether there is plenty of soot build up etc, and be sure and clean the flue pipe that connects to the stove and also check to ensure that there is nothing blocking the flue pipes and that no leaks have developed.

If your house has more than one chimney installed this can also be the problem as this other chimney might have a stronger draw than the chimney that is smoking.

This other chimney will pull the air from any source it can and one of the sources might be coming from that smoking chimney. You will have to block off any other chimneys that is not being used so they will no longer be able to draw air from the smoking chimney.

You should also block all air vents and doors from stoves connected to other chimneys and also if there are any fireplaces attached to other chimneys these will also have to be sealed off.

Other things to check would be any extractors that you may have installed in your kitchen, to blow the hot air out of the room.

There are usually vents placed outside the house near these extractors where they get their air supply from, so be sure and check that there is a vent near your extractor so that it will not be necessary for it to use the air supply from your smoking chimney.

Another possibility is that your chimney may not have been lined or insulated properly. Check to see if your chimney is in fact lined and insulated.

Also you will have to check to see whether your chimney pot is much smaller than your fireplace opening and if this is the case then you will have to replace your chimney pot for a wider one and since you are changing it in any case you should get one that is also taller.

Bear in mind that if your chimney is not high enough this can also cause it to smoke so you might want to consider making your chimney a few inches higher by adding on a couple of bricks to get the desired height.
