Here are some basic tips to guide you on how to install a simple trench drain.
Start by digging a simple trench in the center of the area that is causing the problem too the place where your drain will end. The width and depth of the drain will depend on the size of the trench that you require.
Your drain must be sloped properly in order for the water to flow freely downhill, and also in the right direction. If you find it necessary you can also grade you lot to get the desired slope.
Next add some gravel to the bottom of the trench around two inches should be enough and place the perforated drain pipe on it. Note that the drain pipe should first be wrapped in a filtered fabric before you place it in the trench on top of the gravel, so that it will be able to filter any loose soil from getting into the holes of the pipe.
Continue filling this simple trench with gravel taking care to fill around the drain pipe on all sides, up to at least an inch. Now place some coarse sand on top of the gravel until it reaches to above one inch beneath the surface.
You can either cover the trench by adding some seeded turf into the sand so that it will grow naturally, or you can choose to cover it with layers of grass, but be sure that the grass is clean so that it will not pollute the sand with finer dirt sediment.
Make sure that the upper end of the drain pipe reaches the surface and then you can cap it off and voila you got yourself a simple trench drain.
