Album Quilts or signature quilts are usually designed by a group of people, usually very close friends or family. Each individual is required to make a block for the quilt.
Sometimes the block will have a signature or sometimes they will be plain but will be accompanied by a slip of paper stating the name of the person who made it and this information will be added to the block by someone who is designated to put the signature on the blocks.
These signature quilts are usually created for special events such as weddings, or a special anniversary. They can also be made to represent various fundraising events, whereby there will be lots of signatures which will represent the various individuals who have contributed to the special event.
Signature Quilts are usually made with a single pattern while the sampler album quilts are made with more that one type of block patterns. These friendship signature quilts would usually be signed by friends and family, and are keep sakes of wonderful memories of loved ones and friends alike.
In the olden days pioneer women treasured these friendship signature quilts, being so far away from their relatives and friends gave them a sort of comfort in having these quilts made especially for them. They can also include poems or personal notes from loved ones. In today's modern times album signature quilts and friendship signaturequilts are still being made for the same reason, although in a different fashion.
How it works is that each member of the friendship group is required to choose a pattern and fabric which will be placed in a box with any other instructions. These boxes will be carried to meetings where they will be distributed among the members who will take them home and complete the block which will then have to be returned by the time the next meeting comes around.
Quilting is still a very social event even in today's modern society, it is a time where lots of friends gather to quilt and to catch up on all the happenings of the past, and after all the quilting and work has been completed, they will still have time to enjoy a bite to eat and probably have a dance, but it would obviously not be a barn dance, it will most likely be a fancy members club.
