Roof Flashing

Roof flashing is made from materials such as copper, galvanized steel, or aluminum and are designed to direct water away from chimneys, vent stacks, skylights valleys, eaves, rakes and where dormers and other walls connect to the roof.

The simplest way to install flashing on asphalt shingle roof is get a roll of roof roofing that is closest to the color of your shingles and flash the valleys.

Place the flashing with the right side facing down and start nailing along the valley from the edges and be sure and space them at least twelve inches apart.

Roll out a strip of flashing at least thirty six inches wide with the right side facing up and place it over the first strip positioning it so that it is center over the first strip and the nail it in place.

If you are installing metal valley flashing for asphalt shingle you have to cut the roofing felt to fit the lengthy of the valley, so you will have to do some measuring before you start your actual cutting.

When you have determined the correct lengths you can cut out your roofing felt and then fit it into the valley, making sure that it has a very tight fit and then you can begin to nail it along the outside edges. To install drip edge flashing you will need to use thirty pound felt for cedar shingle or shake roof.

To flash eaves nail performed metal drip edge in position before applying the roof felt, then nail the drip edge along the rakes.

For vent pipe flashing cut the roofing to fit around the pipe and slide the flashing over the top of the pies letting it lie on top of the roofing on the down slope side and continue roofing over the flashing ensuring that the shingles fit around it.

For chimneys you can install cap flashing which are usually installed in narrow slots cut into the mortar joints but if you prefer they can also be caulked to the chimney.
