First off there are literally hundreds of different types of stains that can happen to a carpet, so you will first have to determine what type of stain it is before you can start getting rid of it, also you will have to determine whether it is a new stain or is it a stain that has been there for a while and you have only now decided to try getting rid of it.
All these things will be the determining factor as to what type of carpet removal method you should use. Here are some simple tips on how to remove carpet stains and how to prevent carpet stains.
Prevent Carpet Stains:
1. The best way to prevent carpet stains is to clean up the spill as soon as it happens. Use white paper towels and blot the spot immediately, continue using new paper towels until it is practically dry with less of the spill transferring onto the paper towel.
2. Use a wet paper towel and gently rub the area with the spill, again continue using fresh wet paper towels until there is no more stain color transferring onto the paper towel.
3. Apply a mild cleaning solution to the spot to clean up any excess residue of the spill and then again use wet clean paper towels to remove all traces of the solution.
4. For quick drying place a fan in front of the spot at high speed, this will prevent any excess water from seeping down into the backing of the carpet.
5. When the carpet is completely dried vacuum to restore the carpet to it's natural texture. How to Remove Carpet Stains:
Removing Liquids:
1. Use a clean white cloth or paper towel and blot up all the liquid on the carpet, repeat this step until the cloth or paper towel comes up almost dry without any transfer of the liquid on the cloth.
2. Rinse the spot with water and use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up all the water, then repeat this step again to remove any excess liquid in the carpet.
3. Use a mild solvent and spray onto the spot and very gently rub into the carpet, then use the wet/dry vacuum to suck up all the solvent, and rinse the area with water and use the vacuum to remove the excess water.
4. You can use a fan if you want the spot to dry quickly and then you will have to use the vacuum again to restore the carpet to it's natural texture.
Removing Semi Solids:
1. Very carefully lift off the excess solid with a dry paper towel and rinse the remaining spill out with water and use clean white paper towels to blot the spot.
2. Use a vacuum to remove any excess solid, and then rinse again with water and use the wet/dry vacuum to suck up any excess water.
3. Use a mild cleaning product to remove any excess stain residue and before you apply it to the carpet you should first put the solution onto a piece of cloth and then gently rub it into the carpet. Never scrub aggressively as this can harm the carpet, and always start at the end of the stain working your way into the middle to avoid spreading the stain further on the carpet.
4. Rinse off the cleaning solvent with clean water and vacuum to remove all excess of cleaning solvent and water.
5. After the carpet is dried you can pass the vacuum over it again to restore it to it's natural texture.
Just a note of caution here, because some chemicals can be harmful to your carpet it is highly recommended that before you try any of them you should read the label and if possible ask an expert carpet cleaner which would be the best product for your carpet. If you are in a hurry to remove a spill that has just happened then the safest thing you should do is use some water and clean the stain as best you can.
