You will have to install copper strips under your shingles
in order to prevent algae stains from regrowing on your roof.
Before you install these copper strips you should clean your roof of all debris, such as leaves etc, and if you have existing algae or moss build up, you should use a special roof cleaner that is specifically designed to clean the existing algae off the roof.
Be sure and mix the solution according to the manufacturer's instructions and use a pump sprayer to distribute the solution over the roof, leave on for around half an hour and then scrub with a light brush to remove the algae stains.
After you are finished scrubbing off all the stains be sure and rinse off the solution with a garden hose and remember to spray from the top of the roof to avoid water from getting under the shingles. Installing the copper strips under shingles to prevent algae from growing on your roof is a very simple task.
You will have to install some copper strips probably around seven inches wide underneath the very last full course of shingles at the top most portion of your roof. Installing them at the highest point of the roof is important as this will allow segments of the copper to be distributed all over the roof when it rains.
Simply slide the copper strips underneath the shingles to about five inches, and nail them down, and be sure and leave approximately two inches exposed to ensure that when the rain falls the copper will also be distributed to the bottom layer of roofing as well.
If it is that you are replacing shingles on you roof, you might want to consider buying shingles that already contain copper strips or zinc granules which releases the metal ions to the surface of the shingles and preventing the roof from darkening and also stops algae from regrowing on your roof.
There are many manufacturers of copper strips who are producing this type of shingle, so you should consider this as one of your options, if you are repairing your roof and need to change your shingles.
