How To Make Curtains

Learning how to make curtains is not a very difficult task, as long as you know how to use a sewing machine and can measure accurately.

There are great advantages to sewing your own curtains; for starters you are definitely going to save yourself some money as the material is going to be much cheaper than going out and buying ready made curtains.

Also you get to choose the style and material to match the décor of your room to perfection. You do not have to choose a ready made curtain that might be a bit similar to your overall décor; you can actually go out and find the perfect match to suit your room.

Ok, to begin to make a curtain you will obviously need materials. Here is your list which is very simple, Different Color Threads, Materials probably in two different colors if you are planning to mix and match.

Embroidery if you are going to be putting borders at the bottoms of the curtain, scissors, measuring tape, safety pins, and bias tape.

First off measure the width of the window and cut each panel approximately twice that length so as to get enough gathers, you do not want your curtain looking skimpy, and also to accommodate seams.

Now measure the length of the window and be sure and leave allowances for the top and bottom hems, and also for the ruffles at the top of the window.

Now jot down your measurements like this:

Width - 2 windows width add 2 inches for seams.

Height - The window height, add 2 inches for hems and 2 ½ inches ruffles. Depending on how wide your measurement is you will have to buy the material to suit.

Now to cut the curtains:

Cut the length of the fabric into two curtain panels. You can either pin these with straight pins before you start sewing them up or you can baste them with your hands.

To make the ruffles at the top of your curtains you will have to fold the hem almost twice the size and then run a top stitch to create the ruffles. Hope this was useful, because it is really a very simple task.
