How To Make A Quilt: To begin making a quilt you will first have to choose a pattern and depending on the pattern you chose you will have to get the proper fabric to suit that pattern, so make this choice very carefully.
That pattern will contain different types of colored squares. It will consist of batting material which can be high loft batting which will give your quilt a lot more filling making it a lot softer, or you can choose a low loft batting which will make the quilt much thinner and not have that puffy feeling, or if you prefer you can purchase what is called fusible batting which you can simply iron onto the bottom pieces eliminating the need for basting.
You will also have to purchase the backing material which is usually a piece of solid fabric. Ok so now that you have chosen your pattern and have gotten the appropriate fabric to suit the pattern you can start cutting out the squares as described in the pattern.
Be very precise when cutting those squares as if one is not properly cut in the proper size your quilt block will not line up properly. Now that all the blocks are cut to the proper size it is not time for you to sew the blocks together, leaving a ¼" allowance for seams. Sew the pieces together so that they are in a straight line. When all the blocks are sewn together you can decide if you are going to put the borders around the blocks alone of if you want to include some on the outside edge as well.
This will definitely made for a more professional finish, and it also makes your finished quilt a bit bigger with these extra borders added to it. If you decided to add borders around the blocks and also at the edges you will have to cut pieces of fabric and sew all the blocks together until you have made one large piece of quilt work, then you can proceed to sew the outside pieces on the borders.
Now baste the three layers, the blocks you just created which is the top, the batting and the backing together. Be sure and choose a color thread that would be suitable for all there materials and starting at the middle start sewing the three layers together in one direction then another and so on, be sure and smooth down the materials to avoid any bulging.
After you have finished sewing the three layers together and have created all your additional sewing lines you can now remove any basting as necessary and trim all the edges of the quilt to ensure that they are all in a straight line. It is now time to finish the edges by sewing pieces of fabric along the edges. Start sewing up along one side then wrap it around being careful at the corners and sew it along the other side and repeat these steps until you have sewn all the edges. Now your quilt is complete and you can feel proud that you have just made your first quilt.
