Hanging Gutters

Hanging gutters is not a very difficult task but it does require precise measuring skills in order for you to have a proper gutter installation. Probably the hardest task you will encounter is determining where you are going to position your gutter outlets.

Your gutter outlets should be positioned so that the water will be able to flow away from your home, choose a spot where there is already a drainage system or position them on the lowest area of your home.

Depending on the length of your gutter run the highest point of your run will be at one end where it will be able to slope downwards to where your downspout is going to be installed or for very long runs that are more the 35 feet long, you will find that the highest point will be at the center of the run, which would require slopes leading to the downspout on both sides.

Once you have decided on the spot where the gutter outlets are going to be you can begin by installing the downspout pipes that will connect to the gutter outlets, but first you will have to ensure that the fascia bracket is installed at least 100mm away from the running outlet and that it is running along the roof where the gutter will be hanging.

Measure the spacing between the two fascia brackets using a string and mark the spot, this will determine exactly where the bracket spacing on the gutter should be and will be your guide when you are ready to install your brackets.

To install the downspouts you will have to cut a piece of drainpipe to the correct length allowing it to fit between the downspout elbow joint on the outlet and the one on the wall. Put the elbows on the pipe and simply snap it onto the outlet and be sure to secure the other elbows onto the wall with a drainpipe hanger.

Now take another piece of pipe that will fit between the wall elbow and hang down to around one foot above the ground, and snap the drain pipe into the wall and attach another elbow joint nearest the ground. Attach a hanger for the drain pipe by this elbow joint and attach a pipe to this joint to funnel the water away from the side of the house.

After you have finished installing your down spout pipes you can begin installing your gutter hangers to the fascia using 1 ¼" screws spacing them at least 24 inches apart. Install the gutters about one inch away from the ends of the roof but make sure and leave enough room at the ends of the supports for the gutter caps.

Check to see whether your corners have a downspout and whether they are located at the end of the run and if they are not them you will have to cover these joints using gutter covers to prevent water leakage. After you have cut out your gutter sections to fit between the downspout outlet and the end of the roof simply put the cap over the end and snap it into the downspout outlet then hook the gutter onto the hangers.

Now it is time to connect the whole gutter system together. Starting from the ground take your connectors and connect each section into place making sure that they snap into the gutter sections firmly.
