Garage Cabinets: To solve the problem of too much clutter in your garage, you can easily get a couple of wall cabinets and stack them up one on top of each another to create a solid cabinet wall for storage.
You will need to fasten the cabinets to one another and then securely fasten them to the wall, and you will have a great looking garage cabinet.
Another good idea is you can remove the door to make them look like open storage shelves, which can also be very attractive.
You may also be able to pick up a used cabinet or what is considered damaged cabinet from stores that sell recycled home building and remodeling products.
These can be bought at very low prices and most of them are usually in very good condition. Also some cabinet companies and plumbing supply stores that sell cabinets often have damaged cabinets in their warehouse, which you can purchase for little or nothing.
Cabinets should never be nailed to the wall. You should always use screws to attach cabinets to a wall, because nails can sometime pull away from the wall without any warning. Screws on the other had are much more reliable as they offer tremendous holding power.
When working with cabinet screws which are usually three inches long, make sure that they penetrate right through the cabinet and into the solid framing lumber at least 1.5 inches.
Be sure and secure the cabinet to the wall properly, as the weight of a single large wall cabinet and the things stores inside it can often be more that several hundred pounds.
Stained cabinets are easy to paint and you can paint them to make your garage look clean and tidy. No need to paint the inside of the cabinet, just painting the outside would be enough to give you a fine looking cabinet.
If you are working with old painted cabinets, be very careful about the danger of lead paint. Cabinets made before 1978 may very well have been painted with lead paint.
It is not recommended that you sand these cabinets, as they can create toxic lead dust. If you absolutely must refinish them you should consider removing the paint with chemical strippers, but be very careful to read the instruction and follow all recommendations. |
