Ceramic Tile Repair: Although the ceramic tiles on your wall or floor have become cracked, you might not need to replace them, you can just repair the ceramic tiles. First off you will have to have a scrap of tile handy so you can take it to your paint store to match it with paint that actually matches your cracked ceramic tile, or if they do not have the exact color in stock maybe they can mix it for you.
Now that you are equipped with the paint, start mixing the paint with the ceramic tile filler and just put a little on to the crack using a cotton swab. Leave the filler to dry for a few seconds before wiping the tile with a damp cloth. After you have finished the crack should be much less noticeable.
For more severely damaged ceramic tiles you will have to totally remove and replace the ceramic tile. Place a rag over the damaged tile and then using a hammer start pounding on it not very hard though, but hard enough to cause the tile to shatter. Remove any ceramic t ile chips with a chisel and clean out the old adhesive using a putty knife.
Be sure and scrape around the edges of the remaining ceramic tiles to remove any dust or debris that may obstruct the proper installation of the new ceramic tile. Always wear safety glasses when performing this task.
Using a notched trowel start spreading adhesive on the back of the replacement ceramic tile and set it in place. Allow the adhesive to dry according to the time recommended by the manufacturer, then start filling the grout lines with grout, be sure that the grout matches your tile completely.
When the grout is completely dried wipe the ceramic tiles with a damp cloth or sponge. If you need to remove the grout because of staining or chipping you will need a grout remover tool.
After removing the old grout and cleaning the grout lines completely you can now install the new grout and be sure and coat the grout with a clear waterproof grout sealer after you have finished the installation as this will help to prevent future staining and mildew.
