What Are Cedar Shakes?

Your Cedar shakes roof like everything else needs good maintenance in order to extend its life and beauty. You should check your roof for any signs of the following and have them repaired or replaced accordingly.

If you feel that you are not capable of carrying out this task yourself it is highly recommended that you hire a qualified professional who will be able to examine and give you a detailed listing of all the necessary repairs that are required.

A general maintenance check should be carried out at least once a year, or after experiencing bad weather conditions, such as a snow storm or heavy winds and rain.

These checks should be carried out by a professional and would normally include the following checks: Nail Popping, Cupping, Guttering, Cracking, Warping, Graying, Mildew, Fading, and Exposure to sun UV Damage, Vent and Splintering.

First off you should sweep your cedar shakes roof to remove dirt, twigs and leaves and cut any overhanging branches that may be touching the roof. Remove any build up of mold, mildew, algae and fungi from your cedar shakes roof with special chemicals designed specifically for cedar shakes roofs.

After ensuring that the cedar shakes roof is properly clean you will have to apply a preservative chemical which will extend the life of your cedar shakes roof protecting it from moisture and direct sunlight which are the two main causes of roof deterioration.

Replacing cedar shakes is not a very difficult task and what makes it even easier is the fact that cedar shakes products have not changed in the many years that they have been in existence so you won't have to worry whether they will match your old cedar shakes because they are all made of cedar.

It is highly recommended that you replace any damaged cedar shakes as soon as possible as this will certainly extend the life of your cedar shakes roof.
