Whether you are planning to do some cabinet painting or brighten things up with some bold bright colors, paint can do wonders for most types of cabinets by providing a complete makeover.
A word of caution here, you should not paint a laminate or melamine cabinet, as paint does not adhere very well or easily to these types of material.
When you paint with a short four inch or five inch foam roller it allows you to totally cover the face frames using one stroke of the brush and hence the wider doors can be easily handled.
You should consider using a paint satin that is very easy to clean and which covers well like satin enamel paint. Before you begin you should remove all knobs, hinges, screws, and even the pulls and put to one side those that you will be reusing.
Remember to empty all drawers and remove them completely from the cabinet. All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned with TSP (tirsodium phosphate), and should be rinsed thoroughly with fresh clean water and allowed to dry.
Putty all holes using wood putty first and then allow to dry. After the putty has completely dried you can now sandpaper al thel surfaces with a one hundred and fifty grit open-coat sandpaper and don't forget to use a vacuum cleaner and clean all the sanding grit and dust left behind.
Prepare for cabinet painting by using masking tape on all the adjoining surfaces and be sure to lay out newspaper or cloths to prevent paint dropping on the floors and the counters. First you will paint the face frames, then all the surfaces on the inside of the doors, then the drawer fronts and last but not least the door fronts.
If you need to put a second coat of paint allow this 1st coat of paint to dryduring the night and then lightly sandpaper all surfaces using a two hundred and twenty grit wet / dry sandpaper. Again vacuum thoroughly and then you can apply the second coat of paint.
Step 1: Again use masking tape on all adjoining surfaces and place drop cloths in position to protect the flooring and the counter top. Start painting the face frames, and when you are done begin painting thedrawers and the doors.
Step 2: Next paint al lthe doors on the inside and while they are drying paint the front of the drawers. After this is finished you can start painting the front of all the doors.
Step 3: Then as soon as all the surfaces which were painted are dry start attaching the doors and begin the installation of the drawers. You must be very careful to properly lay out and drill the holes into a jig and through the doors at the appropriate location for the hinge. Well you are almost done now all that is left to do is the pulls installation.
